What a Degree in Education Will Teach You

A degree in education will prepare you for much more than just developing and implementing lesson plans. It will help you learn how to reach students who have different learning styles, approach children's needs through the lens of their development, and manage challenging situations in the classroom.

1. Learning Styles

A degree in education will introduce you to an array of learning styles that you will come across in the classroom, and prepare you to accommodate each style in order to maximize your students' learning experiences. Some of the most common learning styles that you will learn about include auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic learners.

2. Instructional Strategies

Likewise, you will need to know which instructional strategies will best suit each of the various learning styles. For example, some students will be drawn to cooperative learning experiences, while others will be overwhelmed by then. In addition, many students will benefit from differentiated learning opportunities, which are designed to meet the needs of many diverse learners at once. By learning about each of these different instructional strategies, you will be equipped to teach a variety of learners.

3. Childhood Development

A degree in education will also introduce you to child development basics, so that you will be aware of your students' needs and can anticipate some of the challenges they will face. For example, children younger than seven don't have the ability, physiologically, to think in the abstract about things they haven't yet personally experienced. Knowing this will equip you to plan for educational experiences that are well-suited to your students' current developmental stage.

4. Classroom Management

A degree in education will also equip you with the classroom management skills you will need to effectively and smoothly run your classroom. Some of the strategies you will learn about include preventative measures you can take to avoid problems, effective behavior management techniques, and strategies for developing and maintaining classroom rules.

5. Technological Advances in Education

During your coursework, you will also learn about the latest advances in technology that can assist you in the work of teaching. For example, you may be introduced to web design basics, so that you will be able to post student work portfolios online, or you may be exposed to the latest search techniques, so that you can help students apply those strategies when doing their own research. In addition, you may be introduced to netbooks and word processing laptops, which are now being used regularly in many schools around the country, as well as distance learning techniques.

6. Trends in Education

Finally, you will also learn about the latest trends in education. For example, in recent years, more and more teachers have begun to incorporate differentiated instruction in order to meet the needs of many different students at once. You may also learn about inclusion, student-led parent-teacher conferences, and trends in student assessment techniques.

Earning your degree in education through an accredited college or university will equip you with these skills and more. In addition, when you graduate and eventually enter the field of education as a certified teacher, you will continue to learn about new trends affecting education, so that you can offer the very best educational techniques to your students.
