Alvernia College

This Franciscan private school is located in Reading, Pennsylvania, with additional campuses throughout Pennsylvania – in Philadelphia and Pottsville. Alvernia University offers over 50 degree programs, and education concentrations include early childhood education, middle and secondary school education, as well as special education disciplines.

Originally called Alvernia College, in 2008 it was renamed as a university, and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. For students wishing to upgrade their skills without achieving a degree program the university offers several non-degree programs that can be accessed through evening studies – a perfect option for students with full-time jobs or families.

Classes are offered by semester, and students have the option of attending day or evening classes. Most students who attend the university do so under full-time programs, and 30% of students live on-campus while attending programs, although there are other options for students who require more flexible schedules to complete their studies. Applicants to Alvernia University are required to submit SAT or ACT scores.

Upon completion of their studies, Alvernia University students have access to the Career Services Department, which provides on-campus resources to assist students with planning their next step. Through the Career Services Department students can access job listings, career counselling, skill-building workshops, and resume and interviewing help.

Alvernia University offers easy options for students who are in need of financial aid, and 99% of students at Alvernia University receive some sort of financial assistance. Students are encouraged to complete a FAFSA as soon as possible in order to qualify for financial aid. The school also offers a Federal Work Study program which can provide students with financial assistance in exchange for part time work on and off campus, which is a great way to reduce student debt loads.
