Andover College
First established in 1967 with a campus in Portland, Maine, Andover College was accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in 1998. The Lewiston campus was inaugurated in 2004. The Kaplan Higher Education Corporation acquired Andover College in 2005.
Andover College focuses on presenting programs applicable to current employer requirements in rapid-growth fields. The associate's degree and certificate programs provide students with the necessary skills and education to apply for employment opportunities within their chosen discipline. Andover College offers an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education at both its Portland and Lewiston, Maine campuses. A prerequisite for enrollment in this program is a high school diploma or successful completion of the General Education Development equivalency diploma.
The Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education consists of a mandatory 63 credits. The program is geared towards teaching students fundamental skills and expertise for work with infants to eight-year-old children. Students are taught child development, child-learning progression; the importance of family, culture and community influences on a child’s development; and health, safety and nutrition applicable to early childhood. Graduates will possess skills to develop appropriate early childhood classroom procedures and advocate ethical practices.
Expected achievements in the core program of the Early Childhood Education degree are the ability to critically evaluate and think in composition, humanities, social science, and mathematics components.
An Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education degree prepares students to apply for job positions in an early childhood education setting or continue advancement of their education in this vocation.
Class sizes at Andover College are small and an externship may be available. In addition, group study sessions are available to students to facilitate their educational goals.
