The hot education topic this week is brought to us by the fine people of Stockholm, Sweden. In their quest to squash gender bias among school age children, the school has reduced all types of gender stereotyping within the school. This includes the prohibition of gender identifying words such as “him” or “her”. As a substitute to these words, they are implementing gender neutral “hen”. (I know, right?)

In addition to slashing certain vocabulary and gender-free activities, they have various programs that have been somewhat more controversial than others – a special emphasis on teaching tolerance of same-sex parents, for example.

I’m on the fence with this. I didn’t like the sound of it at first, but the idea is growing on me. I don’t think that they are really trying to convice kids to be one way or the other, but rather just opening the path for kids to develop without such strong outside influences that may pigeonhole them based on their gender. After reading the article on The Huff Post, I was surprised that so many people were so enraged with the idea:

so you want a female quarterback?? some countries still let women love to be women and those are where the most beautiful women are inside and out.. you ever hear of harmony?? complementing each other?? why women WANT to be manly is stupid

Which of you idiots bought into, “There’s no gay or lesbian agenda, we just want to be treated equally!” WHATEVER! As someone else posted – “Coming to a California school near you.” I bet the people of San Francisco are already making plans. I hope the Mayans are right and Christ returns next year. There will be much gnashing of teeth on that day. I pray I’m not in Sweden, California, New York, Massachusetts or any other Godforsaken place that will suffer the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Ok, so these comments are on the extreme side, but you get the point. What’s the big deal here? Is this really all that shocking?
