Capella University

Capella University, the vision of Stephen Shank, originated in 1991. Mr. Shank and Dr. Harold Abel, a highly experienced educator, founded The Graduate School of America, an online university, in 1993. In 1999, The Graduate School of America was renamed Capella University. The university focused on master's and doctorate degrees in its early years, but now offers 1,050 online courses towards 36 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in almost 125 specialties. Capella University is headquartered in Minneapolis.



Capella University was accredited in 1997 by The Higher Learning Commission. It is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Capella University is also a charter member of the Academic Quality Improvement Program, which reviews education institutions on an annual basis and sets stringent goals.

Capella University offers a Specialist Certificate in School Psychology program.

Master of Science in Education degrees are available in Curriculum and Instruction; Early Childhood Education; Instructional Design for Online Learning; K-12 Studies in Education; Leadership in Educational Administration; Reading and Literacy; Special Education Teaching; General Counseling Studies; General School Counseling; and Educational, School and Sport Psychology.

Specialist of Education programs are Curriculum and Instruction and Leadership in Educational Administration.

Capella University has several doctoral degrees in education specialization: Curriculum and Instruction, K-12 Studies in Education, Leadership in Educational Administration, General Counseling Studies, Instructional Design for Online Learning, Postsecondary and Adult Education, and Educational Psychology.
