If you want to become a teacher in Virginia, you will need to start by having a bachelor's degree in education to start off with. The degree will need to come from an institution that is accredited and recognized by the state of Virginia in order for you to be able to apply for a certificate. You will also need to fulfill specific coursework for each level you are looking to teach so that you will be able to show skills in the courses you are teaching.

Elementary Education

In order to teach to elementary students in the state of Virginia you will need to specialize in that as a major with your education degree. You will need to fulfill your requirements for assessments, professional studies as well as endorsements in order to get your certificate in elementary education from the board.

Secondary English

To teach high school English you will need to complete the following coursework while working on your bachelor's degree: 12 hours in literature, 6 each in composition and language, 3 hours in oral language as well as 9 hours in electives to be able to complete these requirements.

Secondary Mathematics

You will need a total of 60 semester hours in mathematics courses distributed out over a number of disciplines including: linear algebra, calculus, geometry, and statistics. These courses should be distributed according to your specific requirements and will need to be fulfilled in order to be able to teach high school math anywhere in Virginia.

Secondary History

You will need to complete all of the following coursework in order to teach high school history: 9 hours in geography, 6 hours in economics, 18 hours in political science or history in addition to receiving an endorsement to be able to teach the class on a high school level in Virginia. Make sure that these classes are taken in accordance with the requirements and you do not take the wrong courses which will set you behind in your efforts.

Secondary Science

You will need to have a certificate from an accredited program in the science discipline you are looking to teach. There will need to be a minimum of 32 semester hours completed in the discipline you are looking to teach. In addition to the 32 hours, you will need to have 18 hours in one of the specific disciplines you are looking to complete.

Testing

You will also need to complete and pass the two Praxis tests that are offered as well in order to be able to attain a teaching certificate.

Alternative Certification

In order to earn a certificate in teaching for Virginia without having a teaching degree, you will need to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree. You will then need to use the Virginia Department of Education to find out what other requirements you will need to do in order to be able to teach in the state without having to earn a second bachelor's degree.
