There are many things to consider when you are looking to become a teacher in West Virginia. The first thing you will need to look at is where you will be going to school. This is because you will need to get a degree from a school that not only offers degrees in education, but a school that is a four-year school that is accredited and recognized as such by the state of West Virginia.

Education

When you are looking to become a teacher in West Virginia, you will need to look at and determine what is the type of school you will want to teach at as well as looking at where you yourself will go to school to be able to teach. You will also need to participate in class observations, student teaching as well as participate in class assessments while you are studying. These will all be required for you to be able to get your education certificate which will allow you to be able to teach in the state of West Virginia. The state does not have a minimum hour requirement to be able to complete the course of study or to be specialized in one subject or another.

Testing

You will be required to take the two sets of tests that are offered by Praxis. The first will determine if you are ready to teach in a classroom setting and will assess your basic teaching skills. The second is a battery of tests that will determine your knowledge and skill set when it comes to determining what it is you are going to teach in the schools. Make sure to know what it is you are looking to teach and that you have a good working knowledge of the material before you go and attempt to take the test and do not get a certificate.

Benefits

The average salary of a teacher in West Virginia is $40,000. You will also receive approximately 15 weeks of vacation per year as a teacher in the state. It takes a minimum of three years to be able to earn tenure in the state. You will need to work in the state for at least that long. If coming from another state, check with the West Virginia Department of Education to see if they will accept your teaching certificate and what it is you will need to do to be able to use your current certificate to become a teacher in the state.

Alternative Certification

If you live in the state or you have a bachelor's degree from an accredited school, you can actually become a teacher without actually completing the education major. You will need to contact the West Virginia Department of Education and you will need to find out a list of all of the requirements you will need to fulfill in order to receive a certificate to teach in the state. Follow the guidelines and make sure to have a proper degree before pursuing this.
