Elementary Education in California

Elementary education schools prepare students to become certified in both the public and private education sectors, teaching kindergarten through 8thgrade. Programs can be broken down to kindergarten through 3rd, or kindergarten through 5th. Students can expect to learn subject matter and teaching methodologies. Coursework includes language arts, social studies, teaching mathematics, teaching and learning methods, assessment, classroom discipline, school administration and lesson planning. Programs also require students spend several hours in an elementary classroom teaching students under the direction of a certified teacher. The teaching profession is expected to grow at a solid rate over the next 10 years as baby boomer teachers retire.
