ESL in New Jersey
ESL schools teach non-English speaking students how to read and write in English. Most classes are run by community colleges or other civic agencies. Tuition is usually very affordable and subsidized by government funds. Most programs have students take an initial assessment to gauge their level of proficiency and then place them in an appropriate class. Students typically take ESL classes so they can obtain work or ready themselves for a GED or college courses. Students learn in a variety of ways including role play, audio/video, memorization and whole language. Most programs have students spend time in a classroom listening to lectures as well as time spent in a learning computer lab.
