General Teaching in California

General teaching schools in California offer students bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in preparation for careers as teachers. General teaching programs prepare students for entry into the K-5 system, where teachers instruct all subjects including math, reading, social studies and science. Core classes include teaching and learning, class management, curriculum development, and educational policy. Students can elect to pursue their education entirely at a four-year institution or begin at a community college and transfer. Upon completion of education courses, they can apply for admittance in to the general education program to complete courses towards a bachelor’s degree. The last semester includes a student teaching experience that allows the student spend several hours practice teaching under the guidance of a certified teacher.
