Kaplan University
Kaplan University was founded in 1937. It has onsite campuses in Iowa, Maryland, and Nebraska; however, all education programs are only available online. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, approved by the Iowa State Board of Education for Secondary Teaching concentration, and certified by the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board for online degree programs.
Academic programs available through the School of Education are varied. An Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies provides students with the ability to seek employment in child care and education. The Educational Paraprofessional emphasis curriculum includes courses on education development; classroom management; and teaching methods for mathematics, reading, and writing. The Early Childhood emphasis contains courses devoted to child development, education, curriculum planning, safety, health, and nutrition.
Kaplan University's Graduate School of Education offers programs for master's degrees in education. Students can study part-time or full-time. Participants in the Master's degree in Education programs are advised to hold a current teaching license. Kaplan University does not guarantee its programs are sufficient to meet licensing requirements and students should verify their chosen program conforms to their school district requirements before enrollment.
A Master of Science of Education emphasizes literacy and language, mathematics, science, technology, and special needs children for Kindergarten through Grade 12. The Master of Science in Higher Education specializes in college administration, leadership, teaching (including online teaching), and student affairs.
The curriculum for Master's of Arts in Teaching (Iowa Certification Track) prepares students to teach Grades 5 through 12. In addition to core courses, areas of certification are Methods of Teaching Secondary English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, Foreign Languages, and Visual and Performing Arts. An internship, fieldwork experience, and a portfolio are also mandatory.
The Master of Arts in Teaching – Nationwide Non-certification (for outside Iowa) program is for beginner teachers of Grades 5 through 12 and is based on national professional standards. Courses include child and adolescent development, philosophy of teaching, classroom management, and teaching methods.
Kaplan College provides academic counseling, career advisor and resources, faculty mentors, support for military personnel and veterans, and financial aid staff.
