The capital of the United States is the District of Columbia, also referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C. It was founded in 1790. There are several historically significant places in Washington, D.C., such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The National Art Gallery, and the World War II Veterans Memorial. Washington, D.C. is also home to the Smithsonian Institution, which is a resource for education and research featuring a museum complex which includes the National Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Natural History is funded by the United States government and funds from private contributors.
