The earliest evidence of human habitation in Oregon was discovered in the state's Fort Rock Cave and Paisley Caves. The Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through Oregon in search of the Northwest Passage. Oregon entered into statehood in 1859, becoming the 33rd state. Oregon produces nearly all of the country's domestic hazelnuts. Grass seed is also one of the state's largest crops. The timber industry was historically important to Oregon, but in recent years, over-harvesting and forest fires have deeply impacted this industry.
