Secondary Education in Tennessee

Secondary education schools offer students teacher preparation programs at the bachelor’s and master’s degree levels. Students can choose to teach after they receive their bachelor’s degree, or go directly into a master’s program. Teachers with master’s degree credentials make more than their colleagues who have bachelor’s degrees only. Secondary education teachers teach grades 9-12 and typically specialize in one subject such as math, biology, English, music, government and history. Students major in the subject they are going to teach and also take education courses that prepare them to receive their teaching certificate. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects favorable job prospects for sSecondary education graduates, due to pending retirements of thousands of current high school teachers.
