Secondary Education in Utah
Secondary education schools prepare students to teach at the middle and high school level. Students typically take teaching and learning classes, as well as courses on the subject matter that they plan on teaching, such as history, science, mathematics, and physical education. Secondary education differs from elementary education because teachers typically only teach one subject. Secondary education students must also spend one semester in a classroom practicing their teaching skills under the supervision of a certified teacher at an accredited school. This experience happens during the senior year. Degrees offered include four-year bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Admission to these programs is selective, and based on prerequisite courses and grade point average.
