Special Education in Texas

Special education schools prepare students for careers as special education teachers. Most teachers work in public education classrooms at the primary and secondary levels. Students learn to work with children who have a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. Most programs are housed within a university’s college of education that awards bachelor’s degrees and above. Many students start out at the community college level before transferring. Students must take general courses and pre-major courses before applying for the major. Once accepted into the program they take classes such as assessment, behavior management, introduction to special education, and human development.
